YURI’S NIGHT 2008 Phoenix, Arizona

April 8, 2008

Saturday, April the 12th is Yuri’s Night, the commemoration of Yuri Gagarin’s first flight to space. All over Earth, parties will celebrate the legacy and hope of spaceflight, from Alaska to Antarctica.

In Second Life®, party central is Extropia!

Special Guests!

We’ll host a full day of events, but the cornerstone will be a special appearance at Sophrosyne’s Saturday Salon by novelist, futurist and gadfly David Brin! Soph will interview David in an open discussion event at the Central Nexus in Extropia Core, from 1 to 2:30 PM Pacific Time.

See our news page for the full article or our schedule page for the full day’s events.

Music to Rock the Night Away!

We’re still finalizing the DJ lineup for Yuri’s Night, but our all-day party will be anchored by Extropia’s good friend, DJ Nicki Petrichor! Nicki was on the decks for Extropia’s Grand Opening last November, playing our national anthem and mixing the world’s finest electronica, and she’ll be back for Yuri’s Night with a very special set of Russian and space-themed electronica, electro body music and more.

See our news page for the full article or our schedule page for the full day’s events.

Extropia is a community of Second Life® residents sharing a common desire to build a positive, beautiful, empowering future for all. Extropia is a place where residents are encouraged to work and play together, and creativity is encouraged. We have no ideology beyond a belief that humanity’s future can be improved through its own ingenuity.

We will try to get into Second Life in the Theater at the Peoria Challenger Space Center for about an hour (and in between talks).

If you cannot meet with us at the Challenger Center, visit us in Second Life!

Cheers,
Veronica Ann

To honor Yuri Gagarin (1934-196 8) and Sir Arthur Clarke, (1917-200 8) author of 2001: A Space Odyssey and a pioneer in the science of satellite communications, world renowned artist Robert McCall will plant a sapling on the grounds of the Challenger Center as a living monument of America’s first visit to the moon and to promote the visions of Sir Arthur C. Clarke.
The sapling is taken from seeds from the original Moon Tree that was planted years ago after astronaut Stuart Roosa took with him dozens of pine, sycamore, fir, sweet gum and redwood seeds into outer space during the Apollo 14 mission in 1971.
Over the years, Moon Trees have been planted all over the world as a symbol of space exploration including one at the White House, the NASA Space Center, in Brazil, Switzerland and Japan.

Circling the Earth in the orbital spacecraft, I marveled at the beauty of our planet. People of the World! Let us safeguard and enhance this beauty – not destroy it.
-Yuri Gagarin,
      Russian Cosmonaut
and first human in space.

Party Profile: Yuri’s Night Phoenix Hits the Press !

People in cities around the world are gearing up for the hottest party in 2008–Yuri’s Night! Phoenix, Arizona is no exception. Not only is Arizona the hottest state in America (the four seasons in Phoenix are: tolerable, hot, really hot, and ARE YOU KIDDING ME??!!), but Arizona and Phoenix are no strangers to human and robotic space exploration. Many universities and companies around the state work very closely with NASA and its international partners to expand our horizons and to better life here on Earth.

In order to help promote education outreach and inspire the next generation of explorers, Veronica Ann Zabala-Aliberto, a senior undergraduate student at Arizona State University’s School of Earth and Space Exploration is hosting Yuri’s Night 2008 in Phoenix. Currently seeking a location to host this worldwide event, Veronica Ann hopes to acquire sponsors from around the nation to support the event.

“It is a dream of mine to show the world that Arizona has what it takes to promote human space exploration. We should never forget those who have gotten us this far. It’s not about who you are or where you come from…it’s about what you do in this lifetime to celebrate the achievements of those who risked it all to better our life as one global family. It’s about continuing the legacy of human exploration and advancement.”

Veronica Ann is not alone. With the help of non-profit organizations like Space Generation, The Mars Society and The National Space Society, Yuri’s Night Phoenix’s dream of hosting the hottest space party in Arizona may become a reality.

“In order to make this party successful, we need sponsors to help provide a location for us to host the party, as well as education outreach materials to educators, students and the general public.” For more information on how to make a donation to the Phoenix Yuri’s Night 2008 Party, please visit the Yuri’s Night Phoenix website (see below) or contact Veronica Ann directly at Veronica at yurisnight.net.
